What we do - CMS HOSPITAL EVENT NOTIFICATIONS
The CMS Interoperability and Patient Access Rule requires hospitals to send electronic Admit, Discharge and Transfer (ADT) Event Notifications to a patient’s identified primary care and post-acute providers and suppliers.
East Tennessee Health Information Network (etHIN) can help Hospitals meet this CMS requirement and reduce the ongoing compliance burden.
Why use a Health Information Exchange to send your Event Notifications?
CMS recognizes that Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) such as etHIN are uniquely qualified to provide these services, noting that an intermediary that facilitates health Information exchange may be used to send the required notifications to reduce the hospitals’ administrative and technical burden related to the new rule.
When are Hospital Event Notifications sent?
Notifications are sent to the patient’s established primary care, post-acute care, and other identified healthcare providers as soon as etHIN receives an ADT for the following hospital events:
- In-patient Admission, Discharge or Transfer
- Observations Emergency
- Department Registration or Discharge
How will etHIN know who to send the Event Notifications to?
The information is collected by the hospital and sent to etHIN in the ADT message. etHIN manages a robust Provider Directory and Master Patient Index to enable notifications in a simple, efficient manner. Notifications are delivered using multiple methods to meet the needs of the primary care or post-acute care provider.
